美国Hinds Instruments, Inc公司是世界著名的(同时也是世界唯一的一家)光弹调制器(photoelastic modulators)生产商。Hinds Instruments公司的PEM光弹调制器可以控制光束的偏振状态的改变,调制速率为20~100kHz。光弹调制器(PEM)的作用就像一个“动态的波片”,可以使快轴和慢轴之间产生一个周期变化的折射率差,从而控制透过光束的偏振进行周期性的变化。具体而言即,光弹调制器(photoelastic modulators)通过对线偏振光添一定的相位使输出光在圆偏振、椭圆偏振、线偏振等状态之间井进行变化,同时光弹调制器(PEM)还可以使光在左旋、右旋两种状态之间进行切换。
